Keyboard shortcuts

Shortcut keys are combinations of two and sometimes three keys. You don’t have to press all two or three at the same time. Pressing hotkeys works differently. An example: the shortcut Ctrl+S. You might think it’s the Ctrl key (often at the bottom left of the keyboard), the plus sign +, and the capital S. Good news: it’s simpler. You don’t have to press the plus sign, and you don’t have to capitalize either.

Rotate Screen

Ctrl + Alt + up/down/left/right arrow

This won’t work on every machine, as it depends on your graphics card and video drivers. However, if it does work, it will rotate your desktop to turn your screen on its side or upside down.

It’s also the quickest way to play a trick on an unsuspecting victim. You can make this change permanent through display settings. Head to the Settings app (press Windows key + I) and go to System > Display.

Here, you can change the Orientation from Landscape to Portrait or a flipped (upside down) version of the two.

How to Rotate Your Screen in Windows 10 Using Hotkeys

If you hold down the CTRL and ALT keys, then press an arrow key on your keyboard, your screen may rotate in that direction. We say “may” because it likely won’t work on computers with more than one monitor or an incompatible graphics driver.

However, you can quickly test if your computer has this feature by holding down CTRL + ALT + Up Arrow. This should flip your computer screen back the right way again.

If this worked, great! Your computer is compatible with the screen rotation hotkeys. As such, take note of these shortcuts for future reference:

  • CTRL + ALT + Up Arrow: Rotates the screen the right-way up (landscape)
  • CTRL + ALT + Left Arrow: Rotates the screen 90 degrees counter-clockwise (portrait)
  • CTRL + ALT + Right Arrow: Rotates the screen 90 degrees clockwise (portrait-flipped)
  • CTRL + ALT + Down Arrow: Rotates the screen upside-down (landscape-flipped)

If you’re wondering what other hidden tricks your Windows 10 computer can do, we covered the above hotkeys and more in our article on cool keyboard tricks few people know about.

How to Rotate Your Screen in Windows 10 Without Hotkeys

On the other hand, if the above hotkeys don’t work, there is another way to fix it. It involves using the screen, so you may want to turn the monitor or tilt your head while you perform these steps.

First, right-click on your desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down until you see the category called Display orientation. Click the dropdown box under this category, then select Landscape. The screen should then rotate back to normal.

You’ll note that you can select four options from this drop-down, each one sharing the same name as the hotkeys we mentioned above. As such, if you ever want to change the orientation of your monitor but the hotkeys don’t work, you can return to this screen and adjust it to your liking.

Undo and Redo

Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Y

I’m sure you all know that you can undo changes using the Ctrl + Z shortcut. It’s the best shortcut to remember when you’ve messed up. Yes, we all wish this feature existed in real life.

Did you know that you can also undo an undo, i.e. redo what you did using the Ctrl + Y key combination? However, this feature is most useful when you have to repeat a task, like pasting the same information into several locations.

Zoom

Ctrl + Mouse Wheel or Touchpad Scroll

With high-resolution screens, we often find that text on websites is way too small to read properly. Here is a little trick that can quickly increase the font size for better reading. Yes, it does require your mouse, though you could use your touchpad instead.

While you hold down the Ctrl key, move your mouse wheel to increase or decrease the font size. When used in the Windows File Explorer, this shortcut will cycle through different Layout settings
This is useful for making a website fit your window size, rather than to adapt the browser window. Or you could use it to quickly change the zoom level in a Word document. Press Ctrl + 0 to restore the default zoom level

How to recover unsaved Word documents

  • 08/13/2021
  • 5 minutes to read
    •
  • Applies to:

Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010

You can try to recover an unsaved Word document by:

If you’re looking for information about how to recover other recent Office files, see the following articles:

If you can’t open the document, or the content in the document is damaged, see How to troubleshoot damaged documents in Word.

To find a lost document:

Search for Word documents

Try searching for the document in Windows:

  1. Select Start, type the document name (in Windows 8.1, type the name in the Search box), and then press Enter.
  2. If the Documents list (or Files list in Windows 8.1) contains the document, double-click the document to open it in Word.

If the search results don’t contain the file, go to the next method.

Searching for Word backup files

Word backup file names have a “.wbk” extension. If you have the “backup copy” option selected in Word, there might be a backup copy of the file.

To check whether this option is on, select File > Options > Advanced, scroll down to the Save section, and then select Always create backup copy.

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, check these two folder locations for a backup file:

  • C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word
  • C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

Note: In these paths, replace <UserName> with your username.

To find the backup copy of the file, select Start, enter .wbk in the Search box, and then press Enter. If you find any files that have the name “Backup of” followed by the name of the missing file, double-click the file name to open it.

If you don’t find a backup file for the document, go to the next method.

Checking the Recycle Bin

If you deleted a Word document without emptying the Recycle Bin, you might be able to restore the document.

  1. Double-click the Recycle Bin on the Desktop.
  2. Search through the list of documents to see whether the deleted Word document is still there. If you don’t know the file name, look for file types such as .doc, .docx, and .dot.
  3. If you find the desired Word file, right-click the file name, and then select Restore to recover the file.

If you don’t find the desired file, go to the next method.

Windows File Recovery Tool

If you are using Windows 10, version 2004 or later, you can try the Windows File Recovery tool. Windows File Recovery is available from the Microsoft Store. You can use it to recover files that have been permanently deleted. For more information about this tool, see Recover lost files on Windows 10.

Restoring documents saved to SharePoint and OneDrive

For documents that you saved or synced to SharePoint, see Restore items in the recycle bin that were deleted from SharePoint or Teams.

For documents that you saved or synced to OneDrive, see Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive.

To find missing content or a newer version:

Word takes different actions to protect your changes in Word documents:

  • If Word opens a document from SharePoint or OneDrive, the program uses AutoSave to save changes to the “cloud” document. We recommend that you leave the AutoSave feature set to On.

If Word opens a document from your local disk or network shared folder, Word uses AutoRecover to save changes to an AutoRecover file. The default AutoRecover save interval is 10 minutes. We recommend that you leave the AutoRecover feature set to On

Restarting Word to open AutoRecover files

Word searches for AutoRecover files every time it starts. Therefore, you can try using the AutoRecover feature by closing and reopening Word. If Word finds any automatically recovered file, the Document Recovery task pane opens, and the missing document should be listed as “document name [Original]” or as “document name [Recovered].” If this occurs, double-click the file name in the Document Recovery pane, select File > Save as, and then save the document as a .docx file. To manually change the extension to .docx, right-click the file, and select Rename.

Note In Microsoft 365 Subscription, when Word starts, it searches for AutoRecover files. If any recovered files are found, Word opens them by having a Message Bar. Select Save to save the recovered file as a .docx file. If there are many recovered files, Word usually opens the last-changed files, and puts the remaining files into the Document Recovery task pane.

Searching for AutoRecover files

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, check the following folder locations for backup files:

  • C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word
  • C:\Users<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

Note: In these paths, replace <UserName> with your username.

If you don’t find the missing file in these locations, open Word, and select File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents.

If you still haven’t found the file, try manually searching for AutoRecover files. To do this, select Start, enter .asd in the Search box, then press Enter.

If you find any files that have the .asd extension, follow these steps:

  1. Open Word, and then go to File > Open > Browse.
  2. In the files of type list to the right of File name, select All Files.
  3. Right-click the backup file that you found, and then select Open.

If there are no .asd files, go to the next method.

Searching for temporary files

Temporary file names have a .tmp extension. To find these files, follow these steps:

  1. Select Start, type .tmp (in Windows 8.1, type .asd in the Search box), and then press Enter.
  2. Select the Documents
  3. Scroll through the files to search for file names that match the last few dates and times that you edited the document.
    • If you find the missing file, go to step 4.
    • If you don’t find the file, repeat steps 1 through 3, but search on the tilde character (~) instead of .tmp (temporary file names start with a tilde).
  4. In Word, go to File > Open, and then select the Folders
  5. Navigate to or search for the folder where you found the .tmp file, and then select the folder name to open the folder contents pane.
  6. At the top of the pane, select the name of the folder. This opens File Explorer.
  7. In File Explorer, change the file type (next to the file name field, near the bottom) to All files.
  8. Open the .tmp file.

Accessing Stats

Click on Stats in your dashboard to view your site stats. If you have more than one site, click on Switch Site to select the site you want to view the stats for.

Views and visitors bar graph

The unique weekly visitors can sometimes be less than the sum of daily visitors for the same week. The same goes for unique weekly visitors being less than your total monthly visitors. This occurs when the same visitor appears multiple times during the week or month.

You may also notice that your visitor count lags behind your views count. This is due to the way we process the numbers. Typically a view is reported within five minutes. However, it can take up to two hours for new visitors to show up in your stats.

Yearly totals are a sum of your monthly totals.

In the graph, the bar that appears furthest to the right shows in a different color. This is to indicate that the day/week/month/year is still happening, so the number may continue to grow.

How Traffic is Counted

The following traffic will not reflect in your stats:

  • Visits you make to your own publicly-available site while logged into your WordPress.com account.
  • Visits from browsers that do not execute javascript or load images.
  • Googlebot and other search engine spiders.
  • Visits to a publicly available site by users that are logged in, and listed as members of the site.

Views by logged-in members of your site, including yourself, are only counted in your stats for sites that are set to private.

Views of password-protected posts or pages (except by owners and members of the site) on public sites will be counted in your stats. If they do not successfully enter a password to view the page, they will be sent to a 404 error page and will not see the content that is password-protected.

Likes and Comments

The Traffic chart also includes tabs for viewing stats for the number of likes and comments on your site. Click on the likes or comments tabs to display a bar chart for those stats.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Posts & Pages

This section of stats will list the Posts and Pages that have received the most views in the time period you’ve specified at the top of the page.

  • A view is only counted for a post or page when the direct link of the page/post is visited or the full post is viewed in the Reader.
  • If a visitor reads a post while viewing your site’s home page, the view will not be counted towards the post, only towards total views.

Post and page views are included in your site’s total views. But they may not add up to your Total Views. There are many views that aren’t tied to a post or page URL. The category, tag, date, and author archive pages, and search result pages are all examples of other views that only count towards total views.

What is the colored bar next to a page or post title?

You may notice a bar next to a particular post or page title. Depending on the color you’ve assigned your Dashboard the bar may be blue, or orange, or another color. The colored bar indicates the posts and pages published within the selected date range.

In the example above, the Post “Yellowstone National Park” was published on September 15th.

Search Engine Terms

These are the terms, words, and phrases people use on search engines (like Google, Yahoo, or Bing) to find posts and pages on your WordPress.com blog or site.

  • The Search terms do not include the terms your readers use within your site’s Search Widget or any other search form.
  • When we don’t know the search terms, we show them as Unknown search terms. Some search engines don’t reveal search terms for privacy reasons. Google, for example, has been encrypting the vast majority of search terms since 2013.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

File Downloads

This section lists the files that your site’s visitors have downloaded and how many times they have been retrieved. Downloads are counted for all accepted video, audio, and document file types.

For podcast audio files, be aware that many podcast apps download files automatically. A download does not necessarily mean that the podcast has been played.

File Download Stats is currently unavailable for sites using third-party plugins or themes on websites with Business or eCommerce plans.

Views by Country

You can see how many views you’ve received per country by the day, week, month, and year.

If WordPress.com cannot determine your visitors’ location, their views will not be reflected in this chart.

Clicks

This stat counts the number of times your readers have clicked on external links that appear on your site. These may be (but are not limited to):

  • Links you add to your post and page content
  • Links placed in comments by your readers
  • Links that appear in your blogroll
  • Links attached to the names of users who comment on your site
  • Links to media files
  • Links to images in a gallery

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Referrers

The referrers section lists other blogs, websites, and search engines that link to your site.

A view is associated with a referrer if a visitor lands on a page on your site after clicking a link on the referrer’s site.

If you see a down arrow next to a referrer, you can click on the arrow to see more specific details. For example, expanding Search Engines will show details for specific search engine referrers (Google, Bing, and more.)

Click on the > icon to explore the list of referrers in more detail.

The number of referrers may not match the number of total views. Not all visitors will land on your site by clicking a link somewhere else. Visitors may type your URL directly into the web browser, click a link in an email, or click a link in another application which then loads the browser.

Marking Spam Referrers

Where do spam referrers come from?

From time to time, internet bot traffic will crawl different websites. These referrers have no impact on your site’s security, but you may not want to see them in your stats. Marking a referrer as spam removes traffic from that referrer from your stats.

To mark a referrer as spam:

  1. Go to your Stats page.
  2. Find the referrer and click on the ellipses (three dots) next to it.
  3. Click Mark as Spam.

The referrer link will go into your personal spam referrer block list and won’t show up in the future.

Each entry in your Referrers (except for a few whitelisted referrers, such as WordPress.com) has a clickable ellipsis next to the view count.

If you change your mind right away, you can click the Mark as Not Spam link that appears where the Spam link was previously:

However, once you have navigated away from the stats page, you will not be able to undo the action.

Marking a site or referrer as spam will not affect your stats. It will only keep that referrer from appearing on your stats page.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Authors

This stat will let you see how much traffic each author has generated, which can be helpful if your site has multiple users. Clicking on a name will reveal the most popular posts and pages published by each author and the number of views each has attracted.

Can Authors see my stats?

All of your site’s users can see the stats: Administrators, Editors, Authors, and Contributors. If you are on a Business or eCommerce plan and have already installed third-party plugins/themes, you can go to Tools → Marketing → Traffic Site Stats, and choose which user roles can see Stats reports.

↑ Table of Contents ↑

Insights

The second tab, after Traffic, is Insights. Your Insights page includes an overview of your site’s stats so that you can view and learn from long-term trends.

The Insights screen shows the following information:

  • Posting activity: A visualization of your posting trends, showing how many posts you published and when.
  • All-time views: A color-coded table showing the total views in a month and the average views per day in a month.
  • Latest post summary: How many views, likes, and comments your most recent post received.
  • Most popular day and hour: What time of day and day of the week your site gets the most views.
  • Tags & Categories: The number of views your most popular tags and categories have received in the previous seven days.
  • Annual site stats: A summary of your site’s activity for the current year to date.

Ads

If WordAds is enabled, selecting the Ads tab will bring up statistics about ads served on your site:

Important information to keep in mind about the Ads stats:

  • Your site must be enrolled in WordAds for this option to appear.
  • WordAds is available on our Premium, Business, and eCommerce plans
  • Your site must be public for WordAds and the Ads stat section to be enabled.
  • Stats for ads are fetched once a day from the ad server. They are not shown in real-time.
  • Ad stats are an estimate and are subject to change. They are finalized the month following the one in which they were earned.
