Cellular transformations
by Marinus Jan Marijs
The idea that on a very small level, like the level of atoms there is some proto-consciousness is called panpsychism.
Panpsychism, once again, is the thesis that some microphysical entities are conscious, The view has a long history in both Eastern and Western philosophy, and many of the greatest philosophers have taken it seriously. It is true that we do not have much direct evidence for panpsychism, but we also do not have much direct evidence against it, given the difficulties of detecting the presence or absence of consciousness in other systems. And there are indirect reasons, of a broadly theoretical character, for taking the view seriously
– David J. Chalmers
If as many mystics claim consciousness is identical with the Absolute, and the Absolute transcends space, time and levels of existence, does it go all the way down to the level the level of atoms, as the British mathematician, logician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) claimed.
The concept of cellular consciousness however is different from the philosophical concept which is a cognitive theoretical viewpoint, and cellular consciousness is perceptual, not a theoretical construction but the conscious feeling of a new activity in the cells of the physical body. This process has been described by some mystics.
Cellular consciousness
“Once awakened, this powerful, primal energy moves with intention throughout the body and psyche, where it is believed to have the ability to transform the body at a cellular level” (Greenwell, 1990).
Cellular consciousness, seen from a developmental point of view, is a further development which takes place after one reaches mahaparinirvana. Aurobindo called someone who reaches this state: the Gnostic, supramental individual. This is level 12C.
It brings consciousness on a cellular level, not just some form of vague interiority, but a high level of consciousness directly on a cellular level. One can find descriptions of this process in the (auto)biographies of Mirra Alfassa, Krishnamurti and Gopi Krishna.
This process differs from bhava samadhi, which is a high level, highly activated subtle energy activation on D-level. Cellular consciousness however is a direct “connection” so to speak of the Absolute, the non-dual Ground, with processes operating on a cellular level. While it is a non-dual state of being, it is nevertheless different from the ‘normal’ turiya or turiyatita states.
Phenomenology of cellular consciousness
With the activation of this cellular consciousness, different kinds of energetic processes are consciously perceived: On 12B-level there are highly activated processes in the brain, on 12C-level these highly energetic processes are activated in all the cells of the physical body.
At the start of this process in the night of the 15th of November in the year 2008 there was a remarkable development: I became awake with a strange energetic development. I sat on the edge of the bed without turning on the light so that my wife Desirée would not wake up. Several centimetres away my body a remarkable energetic pattern was visible, a pattern of what could probable been described as a structure consisting of something that looked like peacock feathers four centimetres across (see illustrations here below) not as a ovoid field but as a coat and pants. Desiree who was now awake, and who can see subtle energies including high-causal level, asked me, before I said a word: “What are these strange peacock feather like structures?” And described in detail this remarkable energetic pattern. So we both had the same observation at the same time, which lasted several minutes. This kind of structure was also on other times visible.
Sometimes there seems to be an almost absolute silence in the physical body, an absence of all muscle tension. It feels like there is a ‘statue-like’ stillness in the physical body. On the other hand all cells seem to be highly energetically activated, with pulsation, wavelike energetic movements and a very strong energetic pressure on the whole physical body.
There are also the 4 phases:
- Energetic pressure
- Radiation of activated particles
- Flowing
- Being filled with liquid light.
Furthermore it seems like some higher-dimensional fields connect with the 3-dimensional fields, in the way a 3-dimensional cube connects with a 2-dimensional square.
There are paradoxical perceptions relating to space and time. There is the perception of transcending space as well as the perception of timelessness, but at the same moment the perception of moving with great speed is present. Another way of describing this situation is being simultaneously inside and outside of Time. Because the process is connected with the Absolute, which transcends space and time, it is a process on a Kosmic scale.

Mirra Alfassa on cellular consciousness
In the book “The Mother: Notebook on Evolution”, the following statements of Mirra Alfassa on cellular consciousness are presented:
I am talking about a new phenomenon in the body, in the cells of the body. For the first time, the cells themselves have felt that they were free, that they had the power to decide…
This new vibration in the body enabled me to understand the process of the transformation. It isn’t something that comes from a higher Will, not a higher consciousness imposing itself on the body; it’s the body itself awakening in its cells. It is a freedom of the cells themselves, a brand new vibration that sets all disorders aright…
At two in the morning, I got up and suddenly noticed that all the cells, or rather the cellular consciousness, felt bathed in and at the same time impregnated with a material power of a fantastic velocity…
It was not just the experience of the divine Presence, but that the Divine alone is acting in the body, that He has become the body…
Gopi Krishna
In the case of a sudden, powerful arousal of the Serpent Power:……..There was no diminution in the vital radiation which, emanating from the seat of kundalini, sped across my nerves to every part of the body, filling my ears with strange sounds and my head with strange lights, but the current was now warm and pleasing instead of hot and burning, and it soothed and refreshed the tortured cells and tissues in a truly miraculous manner.
I was in an extraordinary state: A lustrous medium, intensely alive and acutely sentient, shining day and night, permeated my whole system, racing through every part of my body, perfectly at home and absolutely sure of its path. I often watched the marvelous play of this radiant force in utter bewilderment.
Its peculiarity lies in the fact that, in its entire character, the phenomenon represents the attempt of a hitherto unrecognized vital force in the human body, releasable by voluntary efforts, to mold the available psychophysiological apparatus of an individual to such a condition as to make it responsive to states of consciousness not normally perceptible before.
I was now a spectator of a weird drama enacted in my own body in which an immensely active and powerful vital force, released all of a sudden by the power of meditation, was incessantly at work and, after having taken control of all the organs and the brain, was hammering and pounding them into a certain shape. I merely observed the weird performance, the lightning-like movements of the lustrous intelligent power commanding absolute knowledge of and dominance over the body.”
Excerpted from: Gopi Krishna; The Awakening of Kundalini:
….after the awakening of Kundalini, all the tissues and cells, the nerves and all the fibres in my body were in a state of intense activity after the awakening. I was just like a child in whom an inner reconstruction is going on. I could watch it.
Q:How could you watch it?
A: Internally, by concentrating my thought on my interior, and externally, by certain physiological symptoms.
Q:How could you concentrate your thought on your interior?
A: When Kundalini is awakened and this more potent energy goes to the brain, our consciousness at once undergoes a transformation. It then gets the capacity of not only looking upon itself but even upon the body.
A few months before his death in 1984, Gopi Krishna was asked to write an article on creativity for “Impact of Science on Society”, a journal published by the United Nations. Although he was unable to submit the article before he died, he had completed about 6,000 words. The following is an excerpt from that article:
But almost by a miracle my reason and judgment remained unimpaired, which allowed me always to evaluate my mental condition day and night. I clearly saw my whole organism battling with a new situation in my interior, as if a new and powerful psychic energy was operating in my brain and the nerves in place of the former, much weaker, current whose passage I could not feel at all.
But the powerful energy now circulating in my system filled my head with a silvery luster and darted through my nerves and organs in flashes of light. At the same time, I started to hear an inner cadence, varying in tone and pitch, from time to time, which has lasted to this day. This play of sound is known as unstruck melody in all the books on Kundalini or yoga in India and is an unmistakable sign of the awakening of this power.
Inner light is an invariable feature of mystical experience and has been variously described by the mystics of all ages and climes. In the mystical trance the subject finds his visionary experiences bathed in a heavenly luster and, sometimes, hears voices or sounds coming out of empty space around. After nearly twelve years of uncertainty and suspense I found myself well established in a new state of perception, resulting from a continued biological transformation that had occurred during this long period.
This stream rising through the spine represents the nectar or ambrosia repeatedly mentioned in the texts on Kundalini. Its entry into the spinal cord, and then into the brain, is marked by exquisitely pleasurable sensations far exceeding those of an orgasm. This phenomenon is referred to as Urdhavaretas in the yoga manuals.
During the course of its ascent into the brain it is ramified into smaller streams which irrigate the visceral organs through the nerve plexuses or the chakras, and this can be distinctly felt moving into the various organs; the stomach, liver, intestines, heart, lungs, etc., thus preparing the body and the brain for a higher manifestation of consciousness. The flow of a more potent prana, and this stream of secretions into nerve centers and the brain, is what is implied by the phrase “penetration of Kundalini.”
The metamorphosis of the brain (Gopi Krishna)
The brain is still in an organic state of evolution toward what could be the next plateau in human evolution.
Every major organ begins to function at new levels of activity.
Cells are charged with more potent bio-energy.
Metabolism is greatly amplified or enhanced.
Biochemistry of the organism is significantly altered.
Accelerated activity of the entire nervous system. Affects upon the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Psychological (Gopi Krishna)
Emergence of a new, more refined personality.
Identify powerful new modes of cognition and perception.
Demonstrate greater mental abilities as natural by products of extended consciousness.
To demonstrate that genius can be cultivated.
To verify that noble traits of character are prerequisites to higher states of consciousness.

"A philosophical treatise can be mostly written in object or process language,
but phenomenological descriptions must be by its very nature first person descriptions.
It is for this reason that self-observations, and personal experiences of the author are included."
